A quick word before the tables: hook sizing is not standardised. The number on the box is a convention, not a measurement, so a "size 14" from one maker can differ in gape, shank and wire from another. Treat every equivalent below as close, not identical — and when it matters, hold the two hooks side by side.

To substitute safely, match three things: shank length (the X-long rating), wire weight (X-strong/heavy) and gape. Get those right and the fly ties and fishes almost the same.

Standard and fine-wire down-eye hooks for floating patterns.

Streamer hooks

Long-shank (3X–4X long) hooks for woolly buggers, leeches and baitfish patterns.

Reading the codes: "BL" usually means barbless, "S" a special/scud bend, and a leading "B" is common to Kamasan's range. When in doubt, look up the maker's own spec for shank length and wire weight rather than trusting the size number alone.

Frequently asked questions

Are fly tying hook sizes standardised between brands?

No. There is no universal standard — the number is a convention, not a measurement. The same nominal size can differ in gape, shank length and wire diameter between makers, so equivalents are always approximate.

What is the equivalent of a Tiemco TMC 100?

The TMC 100 is a standard dry-fly hook. Close equivalents include the Daiichi 1100, Mustad Heritage R50 (or classic 94840), Fulling Mill 105, Partridge L5A and Kamasan B405.

What hook is equivalent to the Daiichi 1560?

The Daiichi 1560 is a standard 1X-long nymph/wet hook. Close equivalents include the Tiemco TMC 3761, Mustad 3906B, Fulling Mill 31550, Partridge G3A and Kamasan B175.

Can I substitute one brand of hook for another?

Usually yes, within the same category and a matching size. Check three things — shank length (X-long), wire weight (X-strong/heavy) and gape. If those match, the hooks tie and fish almost identically.
